Conference 2010 - A Lamp to My Feet

‘Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.’

Psalm 119:105 NIV

The third Partners in the Gospel conference entitled ‘A lamp to my feet’, focused on preaching from the Psalms.

As ever, the event aimed to mould and deepen our convictions about the centrality of biblical teaching, and to promote faithful, authoritative preaching in Scotland.

The conference has grown over the last two years, and we looked to continued blessing this year, as we welcomed David Jackman as our keynote speaker.

David is not only an able preacher and pastor himself, but as recently retired President of the Proclamation Trust, has years of experience training preachers to handle the Scriptures effectively. He brought two keynote addresses that helped us unpack the riches of the Psalter.

This year, in response to feedback from previous conferences, two preachers’ workshops were offered. Edward Lobb, director of Cornhill Scotland, came back to offer a workshop for beginners, while David Jackman provided a more advanced workshop for established preachers. Both workshops offered ‘nuts and bolts’ guidelines on how to move from text to sermon.

In addition, Ian Shaw continued his very helpful series, drawing lessons from the lives of great preachers from the past who faced similar challenges to ourselves – this year, John Calvin, following the 500th anniversary of his birth.

All this, together with an opportunity for Questions and Answers, the chance to share lunch and encourage each other in our preaching, as well as a preacher-specific bookstall meant there was much in the day to inspire and bless our ministry.
